If one visits any city, any town, any part of the country, one will find the area stuffed with schools and colleges housed in ordinary building, big building, palatial building and air conditioned buildings all catering to the growing needs of education of the growing population. Such schools and colleges have good, average and excellent teachers in some cases but to our great shock and surprise teachers of good schools and colleges are known for their high charge in private tuition. Such teachers acquire recognition through schools and colleges for extending private tuition inside schools and colleges. It is going from bad to worse almost everywhere with rare exception here and there. The saddest part of the story is that even principals and vice-principal of reputed schools and colleges do not hesitate to advise students to go for tuition. Parents complain that nothing is taught inside schools and colleges. Students complain that teachers never care to remove their doubts with the result they are compelled to knock at the doors of only those teachers who teach in schools and colleges, sometimes private tutors and other coaching institutes.

Now if we analyse the whole scenario we will find the futility of having big and good schools and colleges, Not only this it also speaks of the hollowness of the tall claims made by the authorities of the concerned schools and colleges regarding the excellent performance of the children. Even in places like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata where extensive as well as intensive coaching is given by different coaching institutes secretaries and principals of respective schools and college take a sense of pride in asserting that the laurel brought by the students is the offshoot of their efforts, guidance and patronage particularly when students absent themselves from their classes most of the time for being regular in other coaching classes. This not only negates the tall claims made by the concerned authorities but also throws light on the ills prevailing in educational institutions all over the country. The most alarming situation in the country is that even Nursery KG children are sent for tuition.

True, when sincere efforts are put in by the teachers inside the classes the question of students from going door to door for tuition will automatically be eliminated. Tuition is a cancerous cell eating in to the vitals of the original cells. This infects adversely the creativity of the students. This also blocks their love for self study. IF students learn by themselves they learn fast and acquire more. It is only in this context it is said that “an ordinary teacher tells , an average teacher explains, a good teacher demonstrates and an excellent teacher inspires”. As on date in most of the cases we get the first three kinds of teachers. Teachers capable of inspiring students are rarely available in schools and colleges, creating all sorts of chaos and confusion resulting in minimum progress in the field of education.

The great poet and dramatist Kalidas has rightly said that a teacher, who teaches for the sake of money, is no better than shopkeepers selling goods. With attitudinal change in society a teacher is reduced to a seller and a student is reduced to a buyer only. The lack of emotional attachment between the two is spoiling everything The Guru Shishya relation is no longer that sacred which earlier it used to be mainly because everything is being judged  with a mercenary motive. Teaching, which was known for its sacredness with missionary motive, is missing.

A teacher today in the society is judged by his ability to extend private tuition to the students. He is no longer adjudged best in the light of his sense of dedication and devotion towards his job. Sincerity on the part of a teacher entailing selfless service to the society is no longer given due recognition as was done in the past, Even prestigious awards, meant to be given to teachers. Ban on tuition imposed by the state as well as the Central government is also not being implemented because of the people giving patronage to tuition.

To make the matter worse parents, in the name of cut throat competition take pride in according maximum tuition facilities to their children. In this materialistic world even education is reduced to a material only to be bought and sold in the open market. This commercial attitude of parents is virtually weakening the very solid fibre of education. As a consequence even teachers joining the stream are compelled to become teachers for minting money only. It is no longer their moral duty to see that their students develop under their able guidance. Students posing queries are made to sit in the class by teachers by using their jugglery of words.

In the words of Maa of Aurobindo Asham, a teacher is required to have three weapons in his hand. Experience, Expression and Impression are the real weapons in the hands of a teacher enabling him or her to do the job effectively. But quite contrary to it we find that teachers do have Experience and Expression but they rarely have the weapon of Impression with them.

Since students mind pass through impressionistic stage the impression of teacher on them has the real role to play in the moulding of the future career of the students.

It is high time that we all tag our brains together so as to enable students to grow under tuition free surrounding failing which creativity and originality of the children will be crushed.

The tendency to send children for tuition has to be minimized by parents and teachers involved in it have to refrain from extending private tuition and they should start doing the job with all sincerity inside their classes only, Otherwise students under their guidance can never be useful and worthy citizens of the country. Then only schools and colleges which are known for being the living Temples of learning will be able to cater to the crying need of the country i.e. the need of ideal and worthy citizens.
